Arts Initiative


The purpose of this project is to provide Olympia School District elementary and middle school students with multiple opportunities to experience the performing arts – especially students who don’t traditionally have fair access. We focus on music, theater, comedy, dance, magic, and animals – but we’re always looking for new ideas. This effort also gives us an opportunity to negotiate discounted prices if we bundle performances and are flexible with dates and times. Performances take place at schools on days and at prices the principal has approved. Some special events take place at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts and the Harlequin Theater in downtown Olympia. The Olympia School District Foundation is supporting this project with a grant.

To date, during school year 15-16, this project has paid for, subsidized, and/or provided transportation for:

  • Jim Cogan, Storyteller – 3 schools
  • Alex Zerbe, Magician/Comedian – 4 schools
  • The Mazigazi Band (MLK Day celebrations) – 4 schools
  • The Portland Cello Project (at the WA Center) – 5 schools, 570 students
  • Pink Martini (at the WA Center) – 9 schools, 850 students
  • Kahulanui (a WA Center performance @ Boston Harbor) – 2 schools
  • The Olympia Family Theater’s Shakespeare for Kids – 4 schools
  • JBLM’s Battle Rhythm (pop band) – 6 schools
  • Eric Ode, Singer/Songwriter – 2 schools
  • Kaleidoscope Dance – 2 schools
